Hostel Rules in Nepal: What Every Student Should Know Before Joining

Every registered student hostel in Nepal is required to follow guidelines set by the Hostel Association Nepal and approved by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City office. Knowing these rules before you sign the admission form will save you from unpleasant surprises.

Standard Rules at Most Nepal Hostels

• Gate closing time: Most hostels lock their main gate between 8pm and 10pm. Students arriving after gate time must inform the warden in advance.
• Study hours: Quiet study hours (usually 6pm–10pm) are enforced in most student hostels. Noise, music or loud conversations during this time can result in warnings.
• No alcohol, no narcotics: This is non-negotiable. Students found with alcohol or drugs on hostel premises face immediate expulsion.
• Visitor policy: Visitors are generally limited to family members and must sign in at reception. Male visitors are not permitted beyond the reception area in girls hostels.
• Valuables: Hostels are not responsible for expensive jewelry, cash or electronics. Use the locker provided.
• Food in rooms: Many hostels prohibit cooking in rooms and allow only hostel food. Check this policy carefully if you have dietary requirements.
